Esta obra fue un obsequio a la Armada de Chile por parte de los astilleros de Barrow-in-Furness, donde esta unidad fue construida, y se puede datar en torno a 1930, año de su entrada en servicio. El Araucano fue fue encargado a dichos astilleros junto con los tres submarinos clase O, siendo el primer buque diseñado especialmente para dicho propósito con que contó la Armada de Chile. Arribó a Valparaíso el 24 de junio de dicho año junto a la flotilla conformada por los mencionados sumergibles, sirvió hasta 1959 y fue enajenado en 1962.
