Esta clase la constituía dicho buque junto con sus gemelos Elicura, Orompello y Colo Colo (3°), y habían sido construidos en astilleros de Helsinki, Finlandia, en 1914, para Rusia. Fueron adquiridos por Alemania después de la Primera Guerra Mundial, y posteriormente readquiridos por Chile en 1920, siendo reacondicionados como minadores y barreminas en los astilleros de Samuel White & Co. en Cowes, Reino Unido. Desplazaban 540 toneladas, desarrollaban una velocidad de hasta 14,5 nudos y fueron armados con dos cañones de 3 pulgadas (76mm) de tiro rápido, además de una carga de minas que podían llevar, si se daba el caso.
