Title A name given to the resource Transporte de ataque Presidente Errázuriz hacia 1950 Description An account of the resource Transporte de ataque Presidente Errázuriz, banda de estribor. Este tipo de buque tenía capacidad no sólo de llevar carga además, eran buques de alcance oceánico y podían liderar flotillas de barcazas, a la vez que llevar a bordo destacamentos de desembarco. Junto a éste (ex USS Xenia, AKA 51), fue adquirido por Chile, en los Estados Unidos, un gemelo el Presidente Pinto (ex USS Zenobia, AKA 52). Ambos fueron construidos en astilleros de Rhode Island, y Presidente Errázuriz había sido lanzado al agua en junio de 1943. Su desplazamiento era de 7.080 toneladas, un andar de 16 nudos y un armamento inicial de 2 cañones de 3 pulgadas y 12 ametralladoras de 20 mm, el que fue alterado en Chile, quedando con un cañón de 4.7 pulgadas, 2 de 3”, 8 ametralladoras de 40 mm. y 10 de 20 mm. Ellos también se contaron entre los primeros buques al servicio de la Armada de Chile que contaban con radares. Ambos buques izaron el pabellón nacional el 20 de diciembre de 1946 en Joint’s Port, Nueva York, y el Presidente Errázuriz llegó a Valparaíso el 5 de mayo de 1947. A poco de llegar, el 26 de julio, zarpó rumbo a Alemania para traer de vuelta a compatriotas que se hallaban en precarias condiciones desde los días de la guerra. A comienzos de 1948, es izada a su bordo la insignia de la Escuadra, a falta de unidades más apropiadas, y siguió en este rol hasta 1949. En 1951 es utilizado como buque cuartel, tras sufrir una importante avería en sus máquinas, debiendo incluso facilitarle piezas a su gemelo, que tuvo una vida mucho más activa. Imagen tomada durante su etapa de terminación. Nótense una pieza de tiro rápido de 6 libras (57mm), y una pieza de artillería secundaria de 7,5 pulgadas (190,5mm). Este buque, junto a su gemelo, el Constitución, fueron encargados para reforzar la Escuadra durante el período de tensiones con Argentina. El Constitución fue construido en los astilleros Armstrong de Elswick, Newcastle-on-Tyne. Tras la distensión de los Pactos de Mayo, y el compromiso de limitación de armamentos que ellos implicaban, ambos acorazados fueron vendidos Gran Bretaña, siendo el Constitución rebautizado como HMS Swiftsure y el Libertad como HMS Triumph.
