En efecto, el día 14, el crucero ligero alemán SMS Dresden había sido sorprendido en la bahía Cumberland de dicha isla por fuerzas navales británicas superiores, y tras un breve cañoneo había sido hundido por sus propios tripulantes. El Esmeralda y el Zenteno recogieron a estos últimos y los trasladaron a Valparaíso con el fin de internarlos en Isla Quiriquina, siguiendo las leyes de la neutralidad. Dicha clase estaba constituida por nueve unidades construidas entre 1936 y 1938, a las que les cabrían destacadas actuaciones en los diversos teatros de operaciones navales durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial. Finalizado este conflicto, seis de estos cruceros fueron transferidos a marinas sudamericanas: dos a Chile, dos a Argentina y dos a Brasil. Las unidades que prestaron servicio en la Armada de Chile fueron el O’Higgins (ex USS Brooklyn) y el Prat (ex USS Nashville), que entraron en servicio en 1951, sirviendo el primero hasta 1991 y el segundo hasta 1982.
