Fue una de las figuras gravitantes en la Armada durante las primeras décadas del siglo XX y además tuvo una importante trayectoria como hidrógrafo, realizando numerosas campañas hidrográficas, en especial en las zonas sur y austral. De ellas destacó una extensa comisión en la zona de Aysén que se extendió por más de un año, entre 1900 y 1901 en 1915 llegó a ser director de la Oficina Hidrográfica.
