Durante el Combate Naval de Punta Gruesa contra la fragata blindada “Independencia” tuvo una destacada actuación dirigiendo una de sus piezas de 70 libras. El desempeñarse como cabo de cañón fue un favor especial que le solicitó a su comandante Carlos Condell, el que le fue concedido.
