Su heroica actuación salvó la vida de algunos tripulantes del buque zozobrado, pero en un ulterior esfuerzo no pudo resistir pereciendo en el intento. Anteriormente, en 1962 había recibido la medalla Al Valor por salvar la vida a una persona que se hallaba inconsciente en el mar, acción efectuada en invierno y de noche. Por su acción en la bahía de San Pedro, el 27 de diciembre de 1965 fue ascendido póstumamente al grado de Sub Oficial Mayor y recibió la condecoración Estrella de Oro de la Medalla al Valor. El marinero Fuentealba había ingresado a la Escuela de Grumetes en 1959 y era casado con la señora María Neri Cisternas Sandoval. Posteriormente, en 1966 un patrullero construido en ASMAR recibió el nombre de Patrullero Marinero Fuentealba como homenaje de la Armada a su heroico sacrificio.
