En la imagen, la cureña que conduce su ataúd, arrastrada por cadetes de la Escuela Naval, ingresa en el Monumento a la Marina para que sus restos sean inhumados en la Cripta. Arturo Wilson Navarrete (1851-1936) era guardiamarina de dotación de la Corbeta Esmeralda para el Combate Naval de Iquique del 21 de mayo de 1879. Sobrevivió al enfrentamiento, fue hecho prisionero, posteriormente canjeado, y prosiguió su servicio en la Armada durante el resto de la Guerra y el período de postguerra. Este jefe naval (1879-1945) egresó de la Escuela Naval como Guardiamarina de 2ª Clase en 1897, y tras diversos destinos y trasbordos a unidades navales en los primeros años de su carrera, ocupó diversos cargos de relevancia en la Institución. Entre ellos cabe mencionar la Agregaduría Naval en Londres (1920), la comandancia del Crucero O’Higgins (1926) y la Dirección del Territorio Marítimo. En mayo de 1927 pasó a retiro con el grado de Contralmirante. En marzo de 1932 fue reincorporado y nombrado Director General de la Armada, en septiembre fue ascendido a Vicealmirante y en octubre de dicho año se le concedió su retiro absoluto. Su período al mando de la Armada coincide con la fase final de un período de inestabilidad política y el comienzo de la recuperación de la normalidad institucional de la República.
