Retrato realizado hacia 1915. Hermano mayor del máximo héroe naval chileno, Arturo Prat Chacón, durante la Guerra del Pacífico, en 1880, se incorporó al Ejército como oficial de Artillería, sirviendo en unidades de Valparaíso y Santiago. Tras el conflicto, en 1885 ingresó como empleado civil a la Gobernación Marítima de Valparaíso donde sirvió 30 años, hasta jubilar como Oficial Mayor en 1915. Dicho año lideró, junto a su colega Teónimo Barros Montano, la iniciativa de organizar la Sociedad Protectora de Beneficencia de Empleados Civiles de la Armada, actual Club de Empleados Civiles de la Armada, y fue su primer presidente. Integrante del llamado Curso de los Héroes de la Escuela Naval, participó en las guerras contra España y del Pacífico, y era 2° Comandante de la corbeta Esmeralda para el Combate Naval de Iquique del 21 de mayo de 1879. En la postguerra destacó como fundador del Círculo Naval y la Revista de Marina, y autor de trabajos sobre historia naval y marítima. A lo largo de su carrera participó en numerosos levantamientos hidrográficos, como en Isla de Pascua (1870), costa de Aconcagua (1875), además, fue autor de un tratado de hidrografía. Este oficial (1899-1975) egresó de la Escuela Naval en 1920, se especializó en telecomunicaciones y algunos de los destinos a destacar en su carrera incluyen la Dirección de la Escuela de Comunicaciones (1939 y nuevamente en 1944), de la Flotilla de Destructores (1944), Gobernador Marítimo de Valparaíso (1946) y Secretario General de la Comandancia en Jefe (1947). Mandos posteriores incluyeron la División de Submarinos (1949), la Dirección General de los Servicios (1950) y de la Dirección del Territorio Marítimo y Marina Mercante (1951).
