Title A name given to the resource Capitán de Corbeta Manuel Joaquín Orella Description An account of the resource Capitán de Corbeta Manuel Joaquín Orella Echánez, hacia 1879. Este oficial (1852-1881) egresó de la Escuela Naval en 1866, y en los años siguientes sirvió en diversas unidades de la Escuadra. Durante la Guerra del Pacífico, siendo ya Teniente 1°, tuvo una activa participación, descollando su desempeño como oficial de la Goleta Cañonera Covadonga durante el Combate de Punta Gruesa del 21 de mayo de 1879, durante el cual dirigió eficazmente el fuego de fusilería y artillería. El 16 de junio de ese año fue ascendido a Capitán de Corbeta, y tuvo otra actuación destacada al dirigir el difícil desembarco de la artillería del Ejército en el puerto peruano de Ite, al comienzo de la Campaña de Tacna y Arica. Posteriormente participó en la Expedición al Norte del Perú al mando del Capitán de Navío Patricio Lynch y en diciembre de 1880 tomó el mando del transporte armado Amazonas. Tras cumplir una misión diplomática en Panamá con este buque, falleció de paludismo en Guayaquil en marzo de 1881. Sus restos fueron repatriados en 1896. Este jefe naval (1847-1914) ingresó a la Escuela Naval en 1858, formando parte del llamado Curso de los Héroes. Egresó como Guardiamarina en 1861, años más tarde tomó parte en la Guerra contra España de 1865-1866 y durante la Guerra del Pacífico tomó parte en numerosas acciones, como en la toma de Pisagua, donde se desempeñó como jefe de las flotillas de desembarco. Para las batallas de Tacna y Arica estuvo agregado al Estado Mayor del Ejército. Entre sus destinos de postguerra cabe mencionar el mando del blindado Cochrane durante una visita de cortesía a Brasil, en 1889, tomando parte en el episodio llamado El Último Baile del Imperio en la historia de aquel país. Durante la Guerra Civil de 1891 fue nombrado Ayudante del Presidente de la Junta Revolucionaria, Capitán de Navío Jorge Montt, y siguió en servicio activo hasta 1900, con cargos como la jefatura del Apostadero Naval de Talcahuano. Este oficial (1876-1932) egresó de la Escuela Naval en 1896, tuvo una destacada carrera como oficial joven, la que incluyó diversas comisiones diplomáticas, y llegó a ser subdirector de la Escuela Naval en 1916, imprimiéndole un nuevo sello. También en este período, se destaca por ser uno de los principales artífices del Museo Naval de Valparaíso, actual Museo Marítimo Nacional. En 1919 tuvo un papel clave en la creación de la Mutual de la Armada, actual Mutual de Seguros de Chile. Retirado prematuramente del servicio activo en 1920 por razones de salud, su actividad en el mundo civil fue multifacética, abarcando desde cargos en el sector financiero hasta puestos de responsabilidad gubernamental.
