Al centro El Comandante del mismo, Capitán de Navío (Kapitän zur See) Günther Lütjens. El crucero ligero Karlsruhe entró en servicio en 1927 y tenía otros dos gemelos, el Köln y el Köningsberg. Sirvió en la Marina de Guerra alemana (Kriegsmarine) en las primeras fases de la Segunda Guerra Mundial y fue hundido el 9 de abril de 1940 por un submarino británico, durante las operaciones de invasión a Noruega. Günther Lütjens, con el grado de Almirante (Admiral), comandó la división naval cuya insignia era el acorazado Bismarck que realizó una célebre campaña en el Atlántico, siendo objeto de una cacería por la flota británica, que lo hundió el 27 de mayo de 1941.
