Las tres condecoraciones que luce son claramente un retoque respecto de la fotografía original, de la que hay copias donde éstas no aparecen. La imagen es una copia, seguramente producida en cantidades en los años de la guerra del Pacífico, después de conocerse y popularizarse la figura de Prat y su gesta. El timbre del estudio fotográfico se halla al reverso, y corresponde a Fermín Valenzuela, fotógrafo activo en Valparaíso entre 1868 y, al menos, 1884.
