Las instalaciones de la factoría fueron construidas por la Sociedad Ballenera de Magallanes, firma chileno-noruega que cesó sus actividades en 1931. La estación británica funcionó entre 1944 y el 5 de diciembre de 1967, cuando una erupción volcánica obligó a abandonarla fue ocupada nuevamente entre 1968 y 1969, año en que nueva actividad volcánica aconsejó su abandono definitivo. Dicha expedición, integrada por el Pardo y la escampavía Yelcho, se extendió hasta marzo de 1966. En 1962 se encargaron cuatro torpederas similares a la de la imagen, de tipo Lürssen-Bazán, de diseño alemán y construidas en astilleros españoles de Cádiz.
