Ésta fue fundada en 1947 con el nombre original de Base Soberanía, y posteriormente éste fue cambiado por el de Arturo Prat. Fue la primera base chilena establecida en territorio Antártico y estuvo activa hasta 2004 luego de un receso fue reactivada en 2008 y declarada Monumento Nacional en 2010.
